SWIMS: Project Background

What is the SWIMS Project?

SWIMS stands for the South West Impact of Multiple Sclerosis. The SWIMS project will evaluate how people with MS in the South-West Peninsula are affected by their condition over the long-term. We aim to gather vital information about MS from the point of view of those with MS, over 10 years.

Why is it needed?

In order to develop better treatments for MS, we need a detailed understanding of how MS affects those with the condition. Other researchers around the world have looked at how MS affects people from the perspective of doctors, but no-one has ever looked in detail about how the condition really impacts on day-to-day living. If we understand this better, we can develop treatments that are important to people with MS.

Why do this research in the South West Peninsula?

The counties of Devon and Cornwall traditionally have very low population migration rates, making it easier to keep in contact with the MS population over time.

Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS)

We are also interested in including people who have had just one episode of inflammation. Our aim is to identify all patients who have had episodes of inflammation, whether a single event or as part of a more progressive course.
